It’s an interesting question – ‘So who’s really in charge?” Is it your Conscious mind or is it your subconscious mind? “Conscious mind of course!” I hear you say… OK lets put that to the test. A simple demonstration commonly used is this.
Imagine a plank of wood 2 inches thick, 12 inches wide and 20 feet long (50 mm x 300mm x 6m). Firstly imagine it lying on the ground. You’ll be able to walk across it no problem right!
OK now lets move the plank off the ground until it is suspended between two buildings 30 feet (9m) off the ground. Now how does that feel? Can you still imagine yourself walking across it with ease? How far did you get? What thoughts came up just looking at the plank and that distance to the ground?
So, who’s in charge?
Who remembers the words out of Charles Dickens novel “Oliver Twist”?
And that famous line: “Please, sir, I want some more.’ ‘What!’ said the master at length, in a faint voice. “More!”
Well in many ways your conscious mind could be likened to Oliver Twist and your subconscious as the master. We often ask for more: more money, better health, better relationships, better job, lose weight etc but, more often than not we don’t get what we were seeking. Why is that?
In many instances it boils down to unconscious beliefs. Beliefs that we developed whilst we were growing up as well as now. We programmed our subconscious through, believe it or not, self hypnosis!
Why is that? Modern science is learning that the brain wires itself on the strongest repeated inputs. When we are young, our minds are the most plastic and we take in what we observe. We do not have a strong reasoning faculty until much later in life!
So even though we may want something consciously, our subconscious will be working against us because that it what it believes we really want.
So can we change our subconscious with beliefs that support us? We sure can. We can do that with the power of hypnosis.
