Two steps forward, one step back…

An interesting thing about personal change.  It’s not all plain sailing.  You think you are steaming ahead or sometimes going nowhere! Sometimes there’s lots happening, other times nothing.  It all feels like its is two steps forward, one step back!

But why the step back?  The challenge we face is that the old programming hasn’t gone entirely.  It keeps popping up every so often.  Some times when you least expect it, other times when an older trigger comes back into your life.

So why does the new stuff not just wipe out the old stuff!  Overnight even!  Well, it all has to do with the brain and how it is wired!  The old stuff is like a well worn path that gets used every day.  When you stop using the path. it takes awhile for it to start growing over and eventually disappear.  I don’t know if you have ever created a new path or seen one where people have decided to take a short cut.  It takes a little while before you notice that there is a path there.  Once you do and start using it, it quickly starts to look like it has been there for years.  The new habits or changes that you want to take hold take time to develop the connections and strength, just like a new path takes time to look like an old path!

So until the new habits or changes are firmly embedded in the brain, guess what?  That’s right, the old habits will still surface.  So how do you let go of the old habits.  Well the brain is a marvellous thing.  When you stop using it, like stopping using an old path, it slowly disappears.  It’s still there, but not as well defined, and slowly gets less defined as time goes on..

until next time

About selfhypnosisresource

Hi there. I have an interest in personal change - for the better and have done so for many years. I am working on meditation - that's a work in progress. I have been on a number of Vipassana retreats. I found these of great value. I also have an interest in self-hypnosis and how it can help with self improvement. My blog is on topics associated with personal change, hypnosis, Vipassana and Huna
